Just for Professionals - Benefits of Doulas for you

What are the advantages to you of having a doula work with the women you are caring for?

A confident, secure client is easier to care for
If a woman wants to have the support a doula provides, most likely it provides her a sense of security and confidence. A woman who feels secure and confident is easier for you to work with!

You spend less time covering basics
Doulas can help parents understand basic terminology, procedures, and medical practices so your client can discuss her care with you from a stronger knowledge base. You won't have to spend precious time ensuring she understands the basics; instead, you can get right down to the finer details and decisions.

Better use of hospital resources
Women may be more likely to come into hospital slightly later in labor, freeing up beds and freeing staff from caring for women in the very early stages of labor. At the same time, there is no evidence that clients with doulas come into hospital so late that medical care is compromised.

Less time spent on unskilled service
Doulas can get the client water or a blanket, rinse out a cool cloth, change the sheets, and help to tidy up.

Doulas are a source of referral
Doulas can be an excellent source of referrals to an individual doctor's practice or to a hospital. Women in the self-selecting pool of those who seek doula support are also more likely to be highly selective in their choice of caregiver and place of birth, and will ask for referrals.
