The
Pregnancy Book
William & Martha Sears
We have not
reviewed this pregnancy book. However, the Sear's books have an
excellent reputation for evidence based care, helpful information
and being supportive of parent's choices.
Amazon review: The Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one
guide to pregnancy from William and Martha Sears, creators of the
concept of "attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters
represents a month, and deals with physical and emotional changes,
describes the growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns.
The authors also focus on nutrition, exercise, information and
support for home births and birthing centers, traveling while
pregnant, how to avoid episiotomy, and so on. The approach is
gentle, thorough, and includes more information than some
month-by-month guides, which makes The Pregnancy Book an
excellent choice for pregnant couples. |

Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth
Sheila Kitzinger
Sheila
consistently produces books that are easy to read, focused
on mother and baby centered care, and packed full of
information. This book is no exception! Although Sheila is
based in the UK her writing style appeals to women
everywhere. The photographs thoughout her book show positive
images of women in labor, reinforcing the message that birth
is normal. |

What to expect when you are expecting
Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, Sandee Hathaway
This is an
extremely popular book for newly pregnant women to purchase.
It does contain a large amount of information in a well laid
out format. The downside of the book is that it can, at
times, be judgmental of women who are making choices other
than a standard hospital birth. In addition, it tends to be
quite passive with the expectation that women will always do
as their doctor recommends. |

The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy
Vicki Iovine
Another
popular read for pregnant women, this book takes a
lighthearted view of pregnancy. While funny and easy to
read, it does not support women who choose to have no drugs
during labor and at times can be quite judgmental. |

| What to look for in a good book
on pregnancy |
| |
|
A good pregnancy book should be unbiased. It should
explore all your options, giving the pros and cons of each, to help you
make the right choice for you. |
| |
|
The language should be balanced and not condescending.
The images should be positive ones of pregnant women. Diagrams should be
clearly labeled and easy to understand. |
